OpenPolis Foundation carried out an investigation in 2019, in which it reports that “Italy is one of european countries with the lowest level of feminine employment. Compared to a 66,5 % UE average of every 100 employed women between 20 and 64 years old, our country is the second last position with a 52,5% average which is just above the one in Greece (48%)”. The road transport sector is certainly one of all working fields with the most obvious and widest gender disparities. Despite it’s evident an increase during the last decade, women are still in the minority working in the tracking field. Unfortunately we still don’t have accurate data about this current increase of gender equality in this field. This is a reflection of how far Europe still has to do about this matter of equality. European data points out that in France employed women were 131.800 working in the heavy transport field in 2017, while the ones driving heavy vehicles were 11.000. On the contrary, news coming from Russia are less comforting, where women are actually not allowed to drive heavy vehicle yet. This restriction law will be brought down in 2021 when finally all women will have the work opportunity to drive heavy trucks and vehicle transporting people.
However, in Italy it’s also possible to find out some reliable data. The following data is included in the Interministerial Decree of the 25th of November 2019 and it was provided by the Italian National Institute of Statistics: the category of transportation and warehousing has more than one million of employers (including all positions, not only truck drivers), but men are statistically 70% of all employers.
The italian magazine Uomini e Trasporti (Federtrasporti Group) published a market investigation which reports that freight vehicles enrolled with National Register (October 2019) are more or less 775.000 in the face of 90.000 companies. The employers of the trucking and logistics sector enrolled with the National Truck Diver Albo are about 328.000 until 2016. On the other hand, The Chamber of Commerce of Monza, Brianza and Lodi reported that the women truck drivers were about 3.000 in 2016.
So far there always have been different factors to obstacle the increase of women truck drivers. To begin with there always has been a traditional closure of men environments due to their secret behavior and verbal codes. Despite physical strength has not been a discrimination aspect of life for 30 years, being a truck driver has still got some features which do not contribute to the achievement of a realistic gender equality value. Some examples are: working hours are often less rigid and more uncertain, long travels which include night breaks in not recommended environments, difficulties to keep up with family duties.
Therefore, the italian trucking and logistics field is still firmly in blue even if there are some real pink drafts.
